Finding Time to Write

Life is complicated. You need to do a million little things throughout the day, and writing is usually not included in that list. You have to keep your house or apartment or room clean. You have to go to work. You have to get your house repaired. You have to go to school (unless you’ve graduated college already or never attended college in the first place). Finding the time to work on your art and master your craft is very difficult. I can’t always find time to write. However, there are some windows of opportunity you might have that you can use to your advantage.

Writing first thing in the morning can be very helpful. Most people scroll through their phones or watch tv as they sip their coffee and wait for the fog to leave their minds, but then it’s time for school, work, or something else. Using your mornings to write instead of consuming entertainment is a fantastic opportunity, allowing you to start with a clear mind and a fresh perspective before getting distracted by day-to-day activities and necessities. If you don’t think you have enough time to write in the morning, you will have to start waking up earlier and working then.

Your lunch break is another block of time that can be used for writing. While you eat your lunch, keep typing away at your computer, churning out sentences, and fulfilling word count goals. Finding a space with the right atmosphere is a very important part of this time for writing. Maybe a coffee shop or a small fast-food restaurant will help. Any place you find that minimizes distractions will be a great place for you to write.

Writing when you get home in the evening is also very helpful. You may need some time to unwind, eat dinner, and maybe watch a show or read a book. Then, for college and high school students, you may still have assignments that you need to work on. Do those first. Have a goal for where you want to be on your assignments by that night. Once you reach that goal, then you can begin working on your writing projects. Work as late into the night as you need, but ensure you get enough rest for the day ahead of you. Writing takes a long time, so maybe don’t work for too long at night. I would say finish at around 12 at the latest. Then wake up at six every morning to start writing again.

If you want to be a writer, say goodbye to breaks and sleep. Writing is a long endeavor that will consume many hours of your day. From sunrise to sunset, you will likely be working hard, whether writing, cleaning, doing your job, or working on school. However, that shouldn’t discourage you from becoming a writer. Writing is a fun and often rewarding activity. Getting things out of your mind and onto a page is a very helpful practice, and I recommend that everyone does at least a little bit of writing every day, be that in a journal, a blog, a short story, or a novel! Write whatever you want, whenever you can, and don’t ever stop.

Thank you for reading! Have a fantastic day.
